Handling interruptions

When you are interrupted, ask yourself, what is more important, the interruption or what I am working on? Keep a list of current jobs. This will help you to re-focus on what you should be doing once you have handled the interruption. Try to keep interruptions short, what do you want, why, when? Keep a log of whom or what interrupts you; a pattern may emerge of who interrupts and on what subjects. Be assertive, learn to deal with, have you got a minute? Invent a deadline. Continue to look busy, stand up to interruptions; people rarely suit down while you are standing. Remove the spare chair in front of your desk. Reduce or, even better, avoid eye contact. Collect your papers, check your watch.

Prioritise the options

Having completed the analysis and arrived at a series of options, you must then choose one. Even choosing to do nothing is acceptable as a decision, as long as that course of action is, comparatively speaking, and the best option. Many people find taking a decision difficult, if not impossible, and will try to avoid or defer commitment. This usually arises from self doubt or an unwillingness to be held responsible. Often an organization’s culture encourages and reinforces such behavior by employees and will determine the general propensity for people to take responsibility for decisions. Few organizations measure an individual’s ability to take decisions. Moreover, people are frequently put into roles in which decision making is an integral part and they consequently prove eminently unsuitable.

Accept that friendships change and something end.

Although you have had the majority of my friendships since I was a teenager, there are times in life when people change enough to have nothing in common any more. Something this is temporary, at other time sit is not. Either way, the best thing you can do when a relationship falters is to let it go. Letting go means choosing to see the friendship as it is now, and realizing the need for it to be something else. Relationships have energy of their own. They can ebb and flow. Something you are not quite clicking, at other times you are petering out friendship which do end can still be treasured for what they brought before. They do not to be a mistake. And every time a gap appears, life will usually move in to fill it. Keep an open mind and an open heart, and wait and see.

Questions to clarify your motives

Ask yourself a few things to clarify your motives. Some of the important questions to be asked are, is the objective clear? Have all options been identified? Has data been gathered to support the analysis? Has the analysis been carried out and a brief prepared? The brief should explain the impact from each option. The risk of the option, the likelihood of the risk occurring, the cost of doing it, the implications of not doing it, timing. Unless you have the answers to these questions then you will not be clear as to why you are making the decision. Therefore, you cannot hope to make the right one, or to understand the real drivers of the need to make the decision.
